Kiss Me, Kate
My design of Kiss Me, Kate is a theoretical design completed for my Certificate in Costume Design from Polimoda Fashion Institute in Florence, Italy. For this program, I conducted text analysis and historical research, created mood boards and renderings, patterned and draped a mock-up, and created a professional-level graphic design display in Adobe InDesign in order to communicate the process of my work.
The guidelines for the project stressed originality and transformation, so I shifted the theatre environment of Kiss Me, Kate into an onsite theatre in a psychiatric hospital complex, with character split amongst representations of nurse, doctors, and patients, in order to explore the power dynamics and sexism I saw present in the text of the play. I wanted to emphasize that the misogynistic aura of the show was meant to feel uncomfortable and not glamourized as it sometimes can be.
